Yamandu Costa: The Brazilian Guitar (Perth)
Event description
"The Paganini of the Guitar" - Kurt Masur
Experience the mastery of Grammy award winning artist Yamandu Costa, one of the world's greatest 7-string guitar virtuosos, in a solo performance that showcases the depth and breadth of Brazilian musical traditions. Known for his intense performances and impeccable technique, Costa brings the spirit of Brazil to life with every concert.
Critics have hailed him as "a prodigy" and "one of the greatest guitarists of his generation," celebrated for his ability to "uncover the soul of Brazilian music with his fingers" (New York Times).
Yamandu's name, meaning "the precursor of the waters of the world" in Tupi-Guarani, the native language of Brazilian Indians, aptly reflects his profound influence on the world of guitar music. With a discography that includes 17 CDs and 2 DVDs, and collaborations with celebrated artists such as Bob McFerrin, Pepe Romero and Melody Gardot, his performances transcend mere concerts—they are a celebration of Brazilian culture intertwined with his unique ability to blend musical styles.
A note from Concerts Australia owner, Michael MacManus:
"I first heard Yamandu perform at the 2010 Adelaide Guitar Festival. At the time I was a 1st year student of classical guitar at Melbourne University. It was one of those transformative life experiences. It is hard to put into words, but the concert was unlike anything I had ever seen. A 1000+ seat hall, sold out, with Yamandu commanding the guitar like an extension of his body. It was exhilarating and totally out of this world! I also vividly remember the impromptu concert he gave in the festival bar at about 3am in the morning, collaborating with other artists such as Richard Bona. I took a video of that moment, which you can watch here:Â
I saw him again at another sold out concert, this time at the new Ian Potter Southbank Centre in Melbourne a number of years ago, and it was just as I first remembered him.
It is a dream come true to be able to now present Yamandu in my own concert series, and I am so excited for this Australian tour! If you only see one concert this year, make sure it is Yamandu"
