Event description

Dear ticket holders for:

First Stories from First Nations – Screening of The Warrigal Creek Massacre & Panel Discussion

We are extremely sorry but we have been informed that unfortunately, Alana Marsh will no longer be able to facilitate the event to screen The Warrigal Creek documentary and host a panel on 1 May 2025. She is on unplanned leave and is unlikely to return before the 1 May. As it is Alana who has the permissions to hold the screenings and has the ability to do so in a culturally safe way, we must cancel the event. We apologise for giving you such late notice about this.

While it’s disappointing that this event will need to be cancelled, we completely understand and support the decision —especially given the importance of ensuring that the cultural safety and proper permissions for the documentary are respected.

There were great numbers for attendance of this event which is wonderful. There is obviously a lot of interest and desire for reconciliation and discussion out in Hurstbridge, St Andrews area and surrounds. We very much would like to reschedule this event and we will be in touch regarding the possibility of rescheduling on a future date. We will keep you updated on this.

In the meantime, we hope you will join us at the many other events of the Festival, held over the 1st-4th May. The full program is here: https://allwoodhouse.org.au/program-nillumbik-festival-of-stories/

_____________

This documentary uses investigative journalism to present the evidence available today on the colonisation of Gippsland and explore the events along Warrigal Creek in 1843 where Gunaikurnai people were killed.

A panel discussion will take place afterwards to share perspectives that are not widely understood. By joining us you’ll listen to others and ask questions, creating the opportunity to move your understanding of First Nations people forward.

The event takes place in the beautiful bush location of St Andrews Hall, 1 Proctor Street, St Andrews and is facilitated by Alana Marsh, Aboriginal Partnerships Officer with the Nillumbik Shire Council.

Proposed Program:

  • Acknowledgement of Country
  • Earth awakening song
  • Documentary Screening (54 minutes)
  • Panel discussion - Q&A with a Gunaikurnai or Wurundjeri Elder and members of the documentary team
  • Catering will be provided by a First Nations organisation

Please note

- The content of this film and the subsequent discussion may be confronting. We aim to create a safe space for people to explore the content and their thoughts.

- This film night and subsequent discussion is appropriate for secondary school aged students to adults.
