Yarra Bend Trails to Historic Hidden Gems
Event description
Immerse yourself in a 2.5-hour guided walk through the trails of Yarra Bend Park, uncovering the rich history of the land and its significance, from its Traditional Owners to colonial development. Along the way, spot native wildlife, learn about local plants, and enjoy an active and enriching experience in nature.
Visit a variety of significant heritage sites, walk through a large colony of native flying foxes, and conclude with a 45-minute guided visit of the heritage-listed Abbotsford Convent. Unlike traditional tours, this experience offers an eco-friendly and active way to explore the area on foot, educating participants about the history of the place and its role in Melbourne’s development.
It connects you with both the cultural heritage and the local ecosystem, while promoting well-being through outdoor activity. This walk informs, inspires, and highlights the importance of preserving the natural and cultural landscape of this unique part of Melbourne.
This event is presented by Yarra Bend Tours.
Please note: This guided tour involves walking on mostly uneven terrain (Grade 2 – beginner level) for approximately 2.5 hours, covering up to 8 km. Participants must be confident walking this distance and wear appropriate clothing and footwear—sneakers or trekking shoes are essential.
Accessibility: This event is not suitable for wheelchairs. Riverfest welcomes everyone—we’re committed to making our events accessible and inclusive for people of all abilities. If you have accessibility needs and require support to attend, please email carolyn.tate@yarrariver.org.au

Acknowledgement of Country
The Yarra Riverkeeper Association acknowledges that the lands and waterways of the Yarra, Birrarung catchment, are the unceded territories of the Wurundjeri Woi-Wurrung and Bunurong peoples. We pay respect to Traditional Owners, who have, and continue, to care for Country. We acknowledge that the river now called Yarra has always been known as the Birrarung by its custodians.
