      About Coach Yasu

Coach Yasu” is one of Japan’s most influential swimmers in the Open Water category, particularly in the 10km event. His constant evolution and dedication have kept him competing at an international level for over ten years, with aspirations to remain a consistent representative of the Japanese National Swimming Team.

Yasu first entered the pool at a young age and rose to prominence in 2008, winning 1st place in the 400m Freestyle at Japan’s National High School Championship. He later participated in the 2008 FINA Youth World Swimming Championship in Monterrey, Mexico. By 2009, Yasu transitioned to the Open Water division, where his endurance and commitment to long-distance swimming earned him a spot on the Japanese National Team by 2010.

His significant international accomplishments include competing at the 14th FINA World Championships in Shanghaiin 2011, where he secured a bronze medal in the 10km event at the XXVI Summer Universiade in Shenzhen, China. Yasu made history by becoming Japan's first-ever Olympic Open Water representative at the 2012 London Olympics, finishing 15th in the 10km event. His accolades continued with competitions in the 2013 and 2015 FINA World Championships in Barcelona and Kazan, respectively.

After earning a degree in Economics from Meiji University in Japan, Yasu relocated to Australia to join the Bond Swimming Team at the University of Western Australia and later TSS, training in an elite team of three. He achieved 6th place at the 2014 Pan Pacific Swimming Championship in Queensland. Yasu returned to the Olympic stage at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games, placing 8th in the 10km event with a time of 1:53:04.6, only 4.8 seconds behind the champion.

In 2017, he competed at the FINA World Championships in Budapest and became the Champion of the Asian Swimming Championships in Malaysia. Yasu managed his training independently, collaborating with various national teams worldwide, including the Swedish team in Hurghada, the Dutch team in Eindhoven, and the German team in Font Romeu.

After retiring from competitive swimming in January 2020, he sought a new challenge and moved to Bondi Beach in April 2023. A chance encounter with the Bondi Salties community reignited his passion for the sport. Inspired to share his wealth of experience, Yasu, as a two-time Olympian, is committed to imparting the theories and techniques he honed while training with Olympic coaches and swimmers from Australia, the USA, the Netherlands, France, Germany, Austria, and Greece.
