9.30 - 10.15 am session
10.30 - 11.15 am session (SOLD OUT)
11.30 am - 12.15 pm session

Art can be made sustainably and it can share strong environmental messages to audiences! Reuse and repurpose the many materials around you to make artworks and at the same time educate or entertain your audience through your art. Students will be introduced to the sustainable art making practices of 'The Bowerbird Herd' - a local artist and high school Visual Arts teacher Nichola Bryan.

Questions will be addressed - What is sustainable art? How can we make art from existing materials without buying more new 'stuff' that will eventually end up in landfill? And finally, how can the subject matter and the materials we use in our art making also help to convey an environmental message to our audience?

Teachers will be provided with a PowerPoint document well in advance of this workshop to introduce the artist and workshop content to students, so that they can begin collecting waste items. This early resource will include images of animals on which students might base their works.

Students will very likely need an additional hour to complete their artworks in the days following the workshop. Teachers can then send images of completed artworks to Nichola who will reply with positive constructive feedback.

For this workshop, teachers will need to:

collect waste items.
print A3 line art of animals on which some students can work directly as a background (images will be sent to teachers for printing) OR pencil sketch by students of any chosen animal of approx. A3 size completed prior to the workshop for students who do not use the provided line art. Additionally, students should have a colour image of that animal to reference.
collect scrap paper or cardboard for artwork backgrounds. Minimum A3 size, preferably closer to A2/poster size, plain on one side. Start saving boxes or repurpose old cardboard poster tasks!
obtain rigid cardboard, A3 sized minimum.
have a class camera to photograph completed artworks.
have craft glue.

The Sustainable Assemblage Art workshop ticket includes access to the afternoon shows.
