Event description

YESTERDAY'S TOMORROW: SCIENCE FICTION
How depictions of the future from the sci-fi of yore was shaped by their zeitgeist (and how to spot it in your own work).
DATE: 11:00AM - 29th November 2025
VENUE: The University of Queensland, St. Lucia.

SUMMARY: Discover how we interpret the future in this science fiction, tutorial-style workshop. In this 1 hour session, you will receive a summarised history of science fiction trends from the late 20th-century. You will also learn how the future setting of science fiction is often impacted by (or reacting against) the expectations of the writer's era.

This session is tailored to incorporate Queer and Neurodivergent perspectives on works of both popular and historical fiction. While focused on science fiction, these can also include a number of other genres (such as fantasy, crime, romance, etc.). This session will explore mediums such as novels, film, television, video games, and comics.

SKILL LEVEL: Only a love of science fiction is required to understand and enjoy this session. If you are a first-time writer, a long-time writer, or somewhere in between, you are welcome!

This Creative Writing workshop is taught by a LGBTQIASB+ and Queer-affirming service provider with Neurodivergent assistance from a volunteer. It is intended for Queer and Neurodivergent writers.
