💳 Business Spotlight #3: COMMBANK

Can Your Child Think Like a CEO?

After investigating ALLKINDS and YO-CHI, our Business Detectives are back for Mission #003 — and this time, we're exploring something we use almost every day:

BANKING, MONEY & CARD PAYMENTS! 💰

Have you ever wondered what happens when you tap your card to pay $20?

Does the shop actually receive the full $20?

How does a bank make money when some bank accounts are free?

And why do businesses have to pay fees when customers use cards?

In this interactive 1-hour online session, children will step into the shoes of a Business Detective and CEO to investigate how banks operate, how digital payments work and how everyday financial decisions affect real businesses.

Using Commonwealth Bank (CommBank) as our real-business case study, we'll explore the business behind money — not just how to spend it!

🔍 During Mission #003, Kids Will Investigate:

🏦 Is a Bank Really a Business? — What does a bank actually sell, and who are its customers?

💰 How Do Banks Make Money? — Discover interest, lending, fees and other banking services.

🔎 The $1,000 Money Mystery — What happens when you deposit money into a bank? How do banks use deposits to support lending?

💳 Debit vs Credit — What's the difference between spending your own money and borrowing money?

📲 The Tap-to-Pay Journey — What happens behind the scenes when you tap a card to buy something?

🧾 The Hidden Cost of Card Payments — Does a shop receive the full amount you pay?

🧮 CEO Maths Challenge — How can a small payment fee become thousands of dollars for a business?

🏦 Where Do Banking Fees Go? — Explore the costs of running banking and payment services, including technology, security and staff.

⚙️ Why Do Businesses Accept Cards? — Why might a business pay for a service instead of only accepting cash?

🇦🇺 Australia's Card Surcharge Changes — What changed from 1 October 2026, and what does it mean for businesses and customers?

🚀 Think Like the CEO — If your business must pay card processing fees, would you increase prices, accept lower profits or find another solution?

🧠 More Than a Business Lesson

Young Business Minds Club is designed as a discussion-based experience, not a lecture.

There isn't always one correct answer.

Children are encouraged to observe, question, calculate, compare, explain their reasoning and defend their ideas — just like real entrepreneurs and business leaders.

Through practical examples, children will discover that even a simple $20 card payment involves important business decisions.

They'll explore questions such as:

Is a 30-cent payment fee expensive?
What happens if a business processes 1,000 card transactions?
Should a business increase prices to cover payment costs?
How do you balance customer satisfaction with profitability?

At the end of the mission, children will take on a Young CEO Challenge, making their own business decision and explaining why they believe it is the best approach.

Because running a business isn't just about making money — it's about making smart decisions.
