The Renters' Rights Rundown: New rights for young renters

This event has passed Register

Event description

More than 130 changes to Victoria’s renting rules came into effect on 29 March 2021.

Many of the changes make renting fairer and safer for young people, including:

  • Protections against discrimination and evictions.
  • A new process for managing rent arrears.
  • New minimum standards and the ability to make modifications.

The changes apply to all types of tenancies and provide protections from before signing a rental agreement until after the lease expires.

Join us for a special briefing on the changes, including a Q&A session on what they mean for renters and how workers can support young renters to navigate the new system.

Our guest presenters for this session are:

  • James Tresise from Youthlaw
  • Isabelle Butler from the University of Melbourne Student Union
  • Liam Head from Youth Affairs Council Victoria (YACVic)

This session is open to all, but designed for community service workers who might need to talk to young people about renting issues.

Update on Auslan interpreters

VCOSS is committed to making our events as inclusive and as accessible as possible.

However, due to a national shortage of Auslan interpreters and increased demand, we have recently struggled to secure Auslan for some events.

We're also conscious not to engage an Auslan interpreter if there is no need, potentially taking them away from an event where they are needed.

If you require Auslan please tell us no later than midday on 17 June, so we have enough time to engage interpreters.

VCOSS is the peak representative body for Victoria’s social and community sector, and the state’s leading social advocacy organisation.

We work towards creating a Victoria that is fairjust and inclusive. A society where nobody is trapped by poverty, and everybody is supported to live a life of wellbeing.
