What is YMHFA?
This two day Youth Mental Health First Aid course is for adults (over 18) working or living with adolescents. This course is particularly suitable for parents, school staff, sports coaches, youth workers and support workers.
YMHFA teaches practical, easy to implement and evidence based strategies to support a young person experiencing a mental health problem, worsening of a problem or a crisis.
The great news is that effective early strategies can greatly reduce the chances of a mental health problem affecting a young person's occupational roles including: relationships, independent living, education, employment and general well-being.
The course provides current statistics and information about the following mental illnesses: depression, anxiety problems, eating disorders, psychosis and substance use problems. The course also provides information in how to support and assist young people in the following mental health crises: suicidal thoughts and behaviours, non-suicidal self-injury, traumatic events, severe psychotic states and aggressive behaviours.
Your Instructor
Your YMHFA course will be delivered by Jerem Clifford, an experienced Youth Mental Health Occupational therapist, educator and mentor.
Jerem is an approachable and knowledgeable instructor who uses anecdotes and experiences from his extensive career in youth mental health to connect participants to the course material in a humorous and engaging manner. Jerem's breadth and depth of experience working directly with young people in the community and mental healthcare settings gives participants a unique experience in this training.
Hear from our past participants:
"Jerem was incredible at explaining all the content, providing adequate examples that were relatable and easy to understand. He also had an element of humour that was appropriate but kept the engagement high within the large group and heavy content. He had great energy and an endearing demeanour. He made the course enjoyable and was clearly very passionate about the mission."
"Jerem was amazing. He explained very difficult issues so simply for us to understand. He generally showed a passion for MH and gave us skills and strategies to confidently apply what we learnt. A great leader in MHFA."
On the Day
