Youth Mental Health First Aid Course – with Gareth Dainton

Learn how to support young people with confidence, clarity, and compassion.
This accredited Youth Mental Health First Aid (YMHFA) course is designed for adults who work or live with adolescents aged 12–18. It teaches practical skills to recognise the signs of mental health challenges, respond to a mental health crisis, and guide young people toward appropriate support.

1 in 4 young people aged 16–24 experience a mental illness in any given year (Australian Government data). Early support can make a lifelong difference.

Over two days, participants will learn:

How to identify early signs of common mental health problems in young people
How to have supportive conversations using a practical, evidence-based action plan
How to respond to mental health crises such as suicidal thoughts or panic attacks
How and where to access professional help and other supports

Topics covered include:

Depression
Anxiety disorders
Eating disorders
Psychosis
Substance use
Trauma, self-harm & aggressive behaviours

Upon completion, participants receive a digital certificate and become accredited Youth Mental Health First Aiders (YMHFAiders) – equipped to offer initial support to a young person in need. This nationally recognised certification is also a valuable addition to your CV or resume, demonstrating your commitment to youth wellbeing and mental health literacy.

Developed in Australia and now taught in over 30 countries, this evidence-based course is grounded in research and informed by both lived experience and clinical consensus.

This course runs for 14 hours over two days.
