Youth Mob - Cultural Burning Workshop

Youth Mob

Youth Mob is now in its second year and is a youth network for Aboriginal people aged 14-24 living in southern Tasmania. The two-year pilot program is autonomous, and youth led. That’s right. YOU can help create and shape YOUR mob and learn about leadership, mentoring, enterprise development, public speaking, event organisation and connecting with culture. Patrula Nayri (Fire good) Traditional Fire Workshops

During the Cultural Burning Workshop participants will learn the importance of caring for country with traditional fire practises and land management techniques. The event starts with a smoking ceremony, then walk and talk to learn when and where to burn to regenerate healthy country.

Palawa man Jason Andrew Smith is a cultural burning educator and fire practitioner in the Huon Valley. He runs patrula nayri (fire good) workshops teaching landholders how to manage their property with traditional burning practices and is passionate about passing on oral traditional knowledge.

Fire stick farming - also known as cultural burning and cool burning, is the practice of Aboriginal Australians used regularly to burn vegetation, which has been practised for thousands of years. There are a number of purposes for doing this special type of controlled burning, including to facilitate hunting, to change the composition of plant and animal species in an area, weed control, hazard reduction, and increase biodiversity. While it had been discontinued in many parts of Australia, it has been reintroduced in the 21st century by the teachings of Aboriginal custodians.
