Youth Week Thrift Flip
Event description
Learn how to Thrift Flip with Generation Z
A phenomenon on TikTok and YouTube, ‘thrift-flipping’ is the art of upcycling, reworking or “renovating” op-shop finds, as reinvented by Generation Z.
This Youth Week event, open to all youth (12-24), is hosted by a team of young fashion talents led by sustainable stylist Jo Gambale, who has made it her mission to help “pre-consumers” (the Alpha gen) find their fashion joy through creativity, not over-consumption.
We believe those of every age and experience level will learn something from talents such as fashion grads Samara Darling and Sappho Speirs, who challenge the status quo of their unsustainable industry by practising slow production and circular design.
This workshop, run over two sessions over two days, starts with a trip to the Inner West Sustainability Hub’s Re Place second-hand clothes warehouse, before returning to Green Living Centre's purpose-built space for some seam ripping, de- and re-constructing, embellishing, reimagining, mistake making, confidence growing and, of course, sewing. To get the most out of the workshop we encourage participants to come to both days, but they are also welcome to join the first session and complete the project at home if making it to the second session is not possible.
Participants will have free access to sewing machines, supplies and a range of second-hand buttons, ribbons and other circular textiles to help them create their unique re-designs over the two afternoons.
