Description

This one day interactive training workshop will assist youth workers to develop their understanding of ethical practices - based on the Code of Ethics for Youth Workers in WA - and apply this knowledge in their work.

The training will introduce participants to the Code, and to the suite of materials developed by Youth Work WA and YACWA, aimed at embedding the Code in Youth Work practice, programs and organisations in WA. By the end of the workshops participants will be able to:

  • List the advantages and disadvantages of having a Code of Ethics

  • Discuss the principles of the Code of Ethics for Youth Workers in WA

  • Reflect upon their own ethical behaviour

  • Practice decision making using the Code

  • Develop ideas on how to ensure the Code is embedded in their own and their organisations work

  • Challenge unethical behaviour

Participants will receive:

  • The Youth Work WA Code of Ethics with commentary

  • A poster version of the Code for display in their organisation

  • A poster of the Code of Ethics written especially for young people

*** Organisations can pay via invoice. Please email connect@youthworkwa.org.au with the number of and names of staff you'd like to book via invoice.

About the Trainers:

Zach Gibson

Zach Gibson has been in youth work for more than 15 years, in areas including lecturing/academia, community development, outreach, business psychology and Boorloo’s DIY punk/hardcore scene.

His work has centred on the privilege of working alongside young people, focusing on aspects of belonging, ethics and social justice.

Zach is a co-opted member of Youth Work WA, as part of his ongoing desire for a more equitable and transparent youth sector through the ongoing evolution of the Code of Ethics.

Sal Cleveray

Sal is a questioner of systems, constantly fighting for those caught in structures that enforce the status quo. Using their background in psychology, Sal has worked in crisis accommodation, with the most marginalised and at-risk young people, as well as alongside child protection to reduce reporting rates and child removal. Sal's drive to ensure that the individual is at the centre of the conversation led to her completing a Master of Human Rights (with Distinction) in 2020, writing their dissertation on the experiences of trans and gender-diverse young people in historically oppressive systems. Retired from ultimate frisbee, Sal's life outside of work revolves around her two kids and wrangling their three cats.
