Yule, Mythology & Amanita Mushroom Crafting Workshop
Event description
Join Tami Fuller, a second-generation fiber artisan, arts & fiber educator and exhibiting fine fiber artist and Missy Singer Dumars, owner, steward and educator of Crown Hill Farm for a beautiful afternoon of Yule, Siberian Mythology and Hands-On Crafting of a wool felted Amanita Mushroom ornament.
Explore the symbolism of the traditional red and white motif surrounding modern western Christmas traditions against the backdrop of old-world Siberian lore around Yule.
Some of the early mythology about the yule season involved use of the amanita mushroom by female shamans around the dark time of Solstice as a tool to engage in "flight.” In a move to bring ancient ‘pagan’ Solstice traditions of the season to christianity, some Christian appropriation shifted the narrative from female associated shape shifting to male paternal associations. With its iconic red and white cap, the Amanita colors founded the basis for the now familiar red and white garb of Father Christmas.
There are many ties to the icons of Santa and the ancient Winter Solstice traditions. Learn the symbols and history from Tami as we taste and enjoy a traditional French Bouche de Noel- Yule Log Cake.
Then, as a community, we will come together to craft and create. You’ll make a needle-felted Amanita Mushroom to take with you to decorate your home or table this holiday season.
