Zoe Terakes: Making Art in the Margins Workshop
Description
Join actor, writer and trans rights advocate Zoe Terakes for a workshop on queer and cultural storytelling, ancestry and art as necessity.
Friday, 12 June 2026
4:00pm - 6:30pm
Monarch Hotel Dining Room, Moruya
Art in the Margins is a generative workshop that explores queer and cultural storytelling, art as a tool of liberation, and ancestry as a source of power.
How do we make art under suppression and Fascism? What is the purpose of art in a burning world? What can we learn from artists who did it before us?
We will look at the heroes and angels who came before us and forged their way through the dark, illuminating our way forward. Folks like James Baldwin, Cecilia Gentili, Crystal Love Johnson, Anohni and more.
Where do we draw life force and art force from? How can we summon that power independent of systems and institutions?
Participants will be asked to bring a source of power - an object, a plant, a ritual, a myth, an ancestral object, a story of your grandmother, your community, your swimming place or queer bar. Please make this object something you can hold, even if it is just a picture.
All levels of experience are welcome. This workshop is about generating power and creative force together, and looking back to dream forward.
