2023 Mooncake Workshop Date 2
Event description
Cannot make it on the date 1 event? Don't worry, we will host another event the following Sunday.
2023 Mid-Autumn Festival is coming up again. Do you want to learn to make your own mooncakes? Come create traditional Cantonese mooncakes or snow skin gluten-free mooncakes with us. Since the Han Dynasty (202 BCE - 220 BCE), Chinese people have made offerings to the moon to honor the end of the autumn harvest. The completion of the moon’s cycle is observed as a representation of union in a metaphorical reunion. Traditionally, families and friends gather to ‘worship’ the moon with the creation of moon-related riddles and lanterns accompanied by tea, osmanthus wine, and mooncakes. As the primary provider of mooncakes in the DC metro area, we are excited to teach and prepare this culturally significant pastry with you.
In this workshop, we will be preparing traditional literary mooncake flavors described in a Fall party in Yihong Garden from the Chinese classic novel The Dream of the Red Chamber. We will be preparing four mooncakes in all – two traditional wheat dough mooncakes filled with lotus seed paste and two gluten-free/vegan mooncakes filled with red bean paste. Additionally, we will provide materials for you to create two more mooncakes at home.
All are welcome to gather with us to enjoy this important delicacy in Chinese culture.
