Self-harm involves the deliberate causing of pain or injury to oneself – usually as an extreme way of trying to cope with distressing or painful feelings.
These behaviours are among the most perplexing and misunderstood reactions to distress and trauma despite being engaged in by over 12% of young Australians.
This insightful and evidence-driven course demystifies self-harming behaviours, counters common misconceptions, and explores the diverse forms self-harm can take.
From a compassionate, recovery-oriented and harm reduction perspective, we explore why people self-harm, what to look out for and how professionals and families can best respond and offer support.
Topics include:
