Hear For You is a place like no other – it’s a place where young deaf or hard of hearing teenagers can hang out amongst other peers, have lots of fun and make lots of friends. Our mentors understand and remember well the challenges that a young deaf or hard of hearing teenager can experience.
Our mentoring program brings together teenagers to realise that deafness is more of a “difference” than a disadvantage. We show you that they are not alone, to inspire them, and to share hints and tips on how to deal with all the obstacles that come with deafness.
We want to give you the opportunity to share your experiences with someone in the same boat, particularly when it feels like no one else understands.
We are here to help you get the best out of being deaf, to realise their dreams and live life to the full and that’s why we’re Hear For You!
Program dates are:
Session 1: Sunday May 31st
Session 2: Sunday June 21st
Session 3: Sunday July 19th
Session 4: Sunday August 16th
Session 5: Sunday September 20th
Session 6: Sunday October 25th
Please note that by registering for this workshop, this constitutes your acceptance of a Service Agreement between yourself and Hear For You.
Interpreters
As of 1st January 2023, we will no longer be covering costs of interpreters. These costs will need to be covered by funds in your NDIS plan.
We are happy to help with the booking but will not be paying for the costs.
Providing accessible programs and workshops for all our participants is incredibly important to us at Hear For You and The Shepherd Centre. It is a key area of advocacy for us with Governments and the NDIS. We know making sure the NDIS understands the need for interpreting services is critical through claiming these services in participant plans. When these funds are covered philanthropically through organizations, there is no awareness of the need or funding requirements, nor is it sustainable for organizations to cover these costs through fundraising.

Please be advised that by providing us with your child’s details, you agree and give consent to your child to join in Hear For You's programs/workshops. Hear For You will keep and maintain your details and your child’s details in our database. We, Hear For You, will not share your/your child’s details with other organisations.

FAQs
- What age group is this for?
This program is for high school students (Years 7-12) who are deaf or have hearing loss
- What is the mentor to participant ratio?
Every teenager gets grouped into their year group (7&8, 9&10, 11&12) and each year group will have 2 mentors (1 male and 1 female - subject to availability). The maximum ratio is 1 mentor to 4 participants.
- Can I attend just one session and pay for that session?
We strongly recommend you attend all six sessions where possible. This program was designed to take place over multiple sessions so the mentor-mentee relationship has a chance to grow organically over time. In addition, the themes of each session builds an important bridge to to the next one so we are able to cover a wide range of topics. You're still welcome to join the program after the first session if need be.
- Do I have to purchase separate tickets for myself (as a parent) and siblings to attend the Parent Sessions?
No, only the registration ticket for your child who is attending the program is required
- Can I use my current NDIS funding to cover the costs of attending this program?
Yes, after selecting the NDIS ticket, please fill out the required fields regarding your NDIS plan information so we can process the invoice to be sent out after each session.
- Which Support Category funds can be used to cover the costs?
Funding is usually claimed from the 'Capacity Building Support Category'.
- I plan to register my child onto the NDIS, what information will I need to provide in my application?
Please go to https://www.ndis.gov.au/applying-access-ndis/how-apply for more details on how to apply. We can provide a Service Recommendation about our programs for you to take to the NDIS Planning meeting.
- What if I am not on the NDIS/I am not eligible for the NDIS but I want to attend, what do I do?
Please select the Non-NDIS registration ticket and pay the cost directly. If you are unable to afford the cost, please email john.lui@shepherdcentre.org.au or call 1800 432 749 (1800 HEAR 4Y) and we will be in touch to discuss.
- What are my transport/parking options for the event?
There is free parking on Level B2 down underneath the Hub. The parking entrance is off University Avenue. After parking on B2, take the lift up to Ground Floor You can take the bus to Macquarie Centre or train/Metro to Macquarie University Station and walk up University Avenue to the Hub.
- What can/can't I bring to the event?
No need to bring anything unless you have dietary intolerances and wish to bring your own food/drink.
