About the class:
Celebrate the Winter Solstice! In this class, you will learn to create an open-work crocheted lantern for the Solstice season. We will form the loose crocheted sphere from cotton tread yarn and then stiffen it. These lanterns are perfect for gifts, home decor, or to walk around with at the Hillsborough Solstice Walk! Some crochet experience needed. The light will be provided. The lantern pattern has been designed by the instructor.
Materials to bring to class:
- one skein of cotton 03 fashion yarn (instructor uses Aunt Lydia’s) in any color they prefer
- handful of 9in balloons
- size D or E hook
- thin yarn needle
- scissors
About the facilitator:
Amanda Blanchard
I’ve been crocheting at least since 2002. I’ve been creating my own designs since 2008, in the form of small zombie dolls, unique head and neckwear, life-size dolls, sculptures, and lanterns. I graduated top of my class with an AFA from Durham Tech in 2018. I have experience with being a florist and graphic designer. I’m trained as a grassroots infant through school-age instructor, preschool dance instructor, homeschooled my own children, and am currently a part-time nanny. I’ve been teaching crochet at the Durham Arts Council since January 2024. I’ve been a model since 2018, I’ve taught children’s art programs in Henderson and the Durham Arts Council. I’ve been a dancer and in theater since I was a child; the current play I am a part of is “King Lear was Never Here” in Carrboro.
