Description

Forest bathing, (Japanese: shinrin-yoku; German: Waldbaden) has originated in Japan and is now practiced across the globe to reconnect people with nature. While you won’t be asked to take your clothes off, you will rather immerse yourself in the living, breathing atmosphere of the forest with all your senses.

Imagine pausing to notice the dappled sunlight, the rustle of leaves, the scent of mossy earth, the texture of bark, and even the taste of fresh air.

This practice is an invitation to slow down, let go of your busy thoughts, and focussing on the here and now.

My role as your forest bathing guide will be to take you on a gentle walk through Aotearoa New Zealand’s indigenous forest in the heart of the Bay of Plenty, crafted to deepen your connection with both the natural world (Te Taiao) and your inner self.

FAQs

  • Do we go out in bad weather?

“There’s no such thing as bad weather, just bad gear” ;) - meaning we will go out when it’s raining. The forest shows a different side of itself when it is damp, so it’s definitely worth a visit if it’s safe to do so.

  • Do I have to take my clothes off?

No. Unlike with our beautiful hot pools, this ‘bathing’ experience can be enjoyed fully-clothed. It is more of a nature immersion with all of our senses.

  • What should I wear/bring?

To ensure you’re comfortable during the walk, please wear appropriate shoes and bring multiple layers as the forest can get quite cool. I’d also recommend to bring a day pack with water and some snacks and rain gear.

  • Can I bring my children/dog?

The experience is most suitable for people 16+.

Because we are walking on public conservation land, dogs are not allowed.

  • Where are you guiding and how do I get there?

The forest bathing experience will take place at Te Auheke Trek at Lake Okataina Scenic Reserve, close to the Okataina Outdoor Education Centre. It is a 30 min drive from Rotorua and 1h from Tauranga and Whakatane.

  • I am lacking physical fitness. Can I still attend?

Forest bathing is not a hike. Therefore it is great for people with mobility challenges as we will engage in slow, mindful walking among the trees. The loop trek we'll be visiting is an easy walk that does not require a high level of fitness.

  • Are there toilets?

The closest public toilet facilities are located at Lake Okataina, a five minute drive from the outdoor education centre. However, if nature calls, there are plenty of ‘facilitrees’ around.

  • Can I take photos during the walk?

Taking photos can be a beautiful way to capture memorable moments. However, it can also distract you (and other participants) from your experience and your connection with nature. Hence, I would recommend to leave your phone/camera in your bag during your walk.

  • What are your credentials?

I am a certified Forest Bathing Guide under the Association of Nature and Forest Therapy (ANFT) and hold a concession from the Department of Conservation | Te Papa Atawhai to guide in Lake Okataina Scenic Reserve. Further, I am audited under AdventureMark and hold an Outdoor First Aid certification with Peak Safety.
