Event description

Journal to the Self offers mental health professionals the opportunity to explore and integrate the power of journaling into clinical practice. Facilitated by certified Journal to the Self instructor Jen Taylor, each session delves into a different aspect of Kay Adams' Journal Ladder, providing participants with practical journaling techniques and writing prompts to enhance client self-awareness, emotional regulation, and therapeutic growth. Through hands-on practice, group discussions, and real-world applications, attendees will learn to tailor journaling interventions for diverse client needs, including neurodiverse individuals, children, and families. This workshop is designed to empower social workers and mental health professionals with effective tools to incorporate therapeutic writing into their work, helping clients unlock deeper insight and healing.

By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:

1. Identify 3 key differences between personal, professional writing, journaling, writing therapy, and therapeutic writing.

2. List 3 benefits and 3 risks of using journaling as a therapeutic intervention in-session and as homework.

3. Practice using at least 3 -5 exercises from the hierarchy of writing interventions in The Journal Ladder and then analyze and discuss the applications for clinical practices.

4.  Adapt at least three writing prompts based on a consideration of the unique needs of children, older adults, or neurodivergent clients.
