Event description

Festival Concert 7: Adrift with Gosti

Genre: World, Contemporary, Traditional, Improvised

Time: Saturday 4 October, 7:30–9:00 PM

Venue: Palmwoods Memorial Hall, Sunshine Coast

About: Embark on a musical journey across cultures and sound worlds with Gosti, the boundary-defying trio of Tunji Beier (percussion), Linsey Pollak (winds), and Philip Griffin (plucked strings).

Originally formed in 2020 and renamed after their celebrated appearance at WOMADelaide 2023, Gosti weaves together global traditions, original composition, and improvisation into a sound that is both ancient and refreshingly new.

Each musician brings a world of experience:

  • Tunji Beier, a master of Indian and West African percussion, channels the rhythmic vitality of mridangam, kanjira, and ghattam.

  • Philip Griffin draws on an extraordinary breadth of styles, playing oud, rabab, electric bass, guitar, balalaika and more.

  • Linsey Pollak, renowned instrument-maker and innovator, performs on his own creations, from the cylisax to hybrid duduk, alongside the gaidanet and clarinis.

Their program, Adrift, flows through Macedonian influences, intricate rhythmic cycles, and soaring improvisations. Original works by Pollak become living landscapes, expanded through the trio’s collective artistry and decades-long musical friendship.

Expect music that is at once intimate and expansive, where virtuosity meets playfulness, and tradition finds new life in the present moment.
