Description

Boulder Bash is Affinity's outdoor bouldering session, designed to take community members from the gym wall to real rock in a supported, beginner-friendly environment. Whether you’ve never touched outdoor rock before or you’re looking to build confidence outside, this is your session.

Bouldering is climbing without ropes — low to the ground, movement-focused, and endlessly social. It’s one of the most accessible entry points into outdoor climbing, and we’ve built this day around making sure everyone feels capable and supported from the first problem to the last.

What to expect:
🪨 Introduction to outdoor rock and how it differs from indoor climbing
🧤 Reading routes and problem-solving on real rock
🤝 Supportive community environment with experienced guides
😤 A few falls, a few sends, and a lot of laughs

Gear rental is not available for this session.
The koha is for fuel and crash pad providence.

Who is this for?
Beginner-friendly and open to all Affinity members regardless of experience.

If you can climb at the gym, you’re ready for this. If you’ve never climbed before, we’ll get you started.

What’s included:
✅ Guided outdoor bouldering session
✅ Instruction and movement coaching
✅ Crashpad and matting instructions provided
✅ Community and good vibes

What to bring:

Nau mai, haere mai — all are welcome on the rock. 🤍

FAQs

  • Do I need my own gear?

Yes. You'll need your personal pair of climbing shoes.

Gear rentals are unfortunately not provided for this session.

The koha is to pay it forward for the providence of the crashmats which will be provided for group safety.

  • Do I need any experience?

Prior experience is helpful but not required.

If you do feel like you want to have a 'safer' experience for entry into climbing, you can join us on our Monday Club Nights at The Adventure Centre from 6pm onwards, or our other socials.

The session is designed for beginners and those interested to approach outdoor bouldering with kaitiakitanga.

Your guides will walk you through everything before you leave the ground.

  • How fit do I need to be?

A reasonable level of general fitness is recommended.

The approach to the crag may involve a short walk on uneven terrain.

If you have any concerns about fitness or mobility, get in touch before the event.

  • What should I wear?

Flexible, comfortable clothing you can move freely in.

    Avoid jeans or restrictive clothing.

Bring layers — outdoor conditions can change quickly.

Personal climbing shoes is required. Chalk is optional.

  • What happens if the weather is bad?

    Outdoor events are weather-dependent.

Any changes or cancellations will be communicated via our Whatsapp Community and directly to registered participants.

Always check communications the evening before.

  • Is this only for Affinity members?

    Yes.

This event is open to registered Affinity members only.

Membership is free — sign up via the link before registering.

  • Can I bring a friend?

Your friend is welcome — they just need to register as an Affinity member first, and book in a ticket on their own because we use this platform as an administrative management of head count and rentals.

Membership is free and takes only a minute.

  • Is there a minimum age requirement?

Please get in touch if you have questions about age suitability.

Normally, we do not allow children under the age of 16 to be at our events, unless they have been arranged or have experience prior.

Our events are community-oriented, but not run as exposure experiences for children.
Parents who have children along will be solely in charge of the management of their children, and not affect the running of the sessions.
Disclaimer: Bouldering climbs might not be child-friendly

We just want to make sure every participant has the right experience on the day.

  • Is there a risk of injury?

    Bouldering involves some inherent risk.

Our guides will brief everyone on safety and spotting technique before the session begins.

All participants are expected to follow instructor guidance at all times.
