After School Art

Thursday Afternoons, 4:00-5:00pm (4-weeks per session)

$40 for each four-week session.  Tuition includes all materials.

Upper Elementary:  Suggested Ages: 9-13

Love art and art class and want more of it? Join us in the studio with the wonderful Susan
Feige!  Each four-week session will focus on different art materials, and each week of the session will be a
unique art project with the skills and techniques learned with those art materials. This is a great way to
add new tools to your creative toolkit, explore materials, learn new skills, and make some great art of
your own.

Session 1:  Watercolor

October 15,  22, 29, November 5

Use beautiful watercolor sets and quality watercolor paper and brushes while learning new techniques.  Each week will bring a new fun watercolor project for students to get creative with as they explore and build confidence with watercolor paints.

Session 2:   Pastels

November 12, 19, December 3, 10

Did you know pastel drawings are actually called paintings?  The rich color and deep texture they create brings a basic drawing to life just like a painting!  Our studio has some great pastels just waiting for this session!  Explore chalk pastels, oil pastels, as well as beautiful papers with great weekly projects.  Pastels lend themselves so well to taking an art piece to the next level, and that is just what you will do in this session.

Session 3:  Book-making and Illustration

January 7, 14, 21, 28

Turn ordinary paper into extraordinary books! Learn fun folding and binding techniques to create your own one-of-a-kind artist books, then fill the pages with drawings, illustrations, patterns, and your own creative ideas. Each week brings a brand-new project and new techniques to try as you build your bookmaking and illustration skills—and create books that are works of art all on their own.

Session 4:   Collage

February 11, 18, 25, March 4

Rip, cut, layer papers textures and colors to create unique artwork in this celebration of collage.  Learn new techniques and experiment with weekly art projects in this fun and expressive art style.  No two projects in the studio will look alike, that is one of the most exciting parts of collage. It takes on a life of its own and each art piece turns into its own masterpiece.

Session 5:   Mixed Media & Paper Quilling

March 18, 25, April 1, 8

Get creative, experiment, and think outside the box as we dive into the world of mixed media art! Explore how different materials, textures, colors, and techniques can be layered and combined to create artwork that is completely your own. Each project will encourage experimentation, imagination, and plenty of hands-on making.

We’ll also explore the colorful art of paper quilling, using thin strips of paper that are rolled, shaped, curled, and folded, then pieced together to create intricate, dimensional designs. It’s a little like drawing with paper—and a fun new technique to add to your creative toolkit!

Instructor Spotlight:  Susan Feige

Susan Fiege is a studio favorite here at the Arts Center, teaching adult art classes weekly with us.  Susan is a retired upper elementary teacher who brings her classroom skills, love for art-making, and great weekly art projects to the studio.
