Event description

Kathryn Mannix is on a mission to revolutionise the way we think and talk about the process of death and dying. A pioneer of palliative medicine in the UK for over 30 years, her best-selling book With The End In Mind (shortlisted for the Wellcome Book Prize) sends a vital message to the living and answers the most urgent, intimate, and fascinating questions about the end-of-life process with touching honesty and humility. Starting in cancer care and changing career to become a leader in the new discipline of palliative medicine, Dr Mannix has spent her medical career working with people who have incurable, advanced illnesses, and brings this wealth of experience to the task of helping others to navigate these conversations and decisions.

'We have no cure for death. We’re getting better at postponing it, but sooner or later it comes to us all. So getting informed and prepared seems a good idea. We have no workarounds for daunting conversations. Whether we like it or not, sometimes we have to take a deep breath and get into a conversation that we might have preferred to avoid.

I’ve spent my whole career working alongside dying people, and learning from them. Now, I want to share their wisdom with the world. I’m doing this by writing books and media articles, guesting on podcasts, lecturing and webcasting. If you’re already one of the thousands of people who have joined me on this venture, welcome. Our community of wisdom and kindness keeps growing, so if you’re new around here, welcome too!'

Dr. Mannix is making one public appearance while in Christchurch; this is a rare chance to learn from her in person. She will be sharing a mix of stories, case studies, insights and wisdom. Not just for people working in end of life care - this evening is a home-coming for all of us mortals. You will come away feeling lighter and more inspired about life, with less fear of death and dying.
