Animal Detectives (8-11yrs)
Animal Detectives
Does your child love animals and want to know more about what it really takes to care for them?
Animal Detectives is an engaging, practical school holiday program that gives children the opportunity to explore the world of animal care and welfare at AWLQ. Through activities, behind-the-scenes experiences and age-appropriate learning, children discover that caring for animals is about much more than food and cuddles - it is about understanding their needs, feelings, behaviour and choices.
Throughout the day, children will build confidence, empathy and practical knowledge while learning how small acts of kindness can make a big difference to the lives of animals.
What will children experience?
Animal Care in Action
Take part in practical activities that explore the everyday needs of companion animals, including enrichment, feeding, and creating environments where animals can feel comfortable and secure.
Behind the Scenes at AWLQ
Discover what happens at an AWLQ Rehoming Centre and learn how our teams care for animals while helping them prepare for their next chapter.
Understanding Animal Behaviour
Become an animal detective! Learn to recognise some of the ways dogs, cats and other companion animals communicate through their body language and behaviour.
Enrichment and Kindness Challenges
Design or prepare enrichment activities and discover why opportunities to play, explore, forage, rest and make choices are important for an animal's wellbeing.
Meet the Animals
Where appropriate, children may have the opportunity to observe or interact with selected AWLQ animals in carefully supervised, welfare-focused experiences. Children learn that sometimes the kindest interaction is to watch, wait and allow the animal to choose.

Please be aware that this program takes place within a busy working shelter environment, which may lead to instances of overstimulation such as dogs barking, strong odours, and the presence of other excited participants. Additionally, part of the program will include educational sessions held in a classroom setting. If your young person will require additional support to thrive in the program there is the possibility to purchase a support person ticket to assist on the day.
