Art of Living Intentionally

Event description

Law is what we have come to expect from religion; direction is what we need. Regula, the word now translated to mean “rule,” in the ancient sense meant “guidepost” or “railing,” something to hang on to in the dark, something that leads in a given direction, something that points out the road, something that gives us support as we climb. The Rule of Benedict, in other words, is more wisdom than law. The Rule of Benedict is not a list of directives. The Rule of Benedict is a way of life. And that’s the key to understanding the Rule. It isn’t one.  -Joan Chittister, Wisdom Distilled from the Daily: Living the Rule of St. Benedict Today, (p. 7)

Conscious of it or not, there is little question that we all live by some kind of inner “rule” or rhythm for life and living. The real questions, then, are “what habits and dispositions are ruling you?”, and “which of these rhythms and attitudes are lifting you up to better life… and which are leading you nowhere?”

Join us for this 3-hour workshop in which we will explore the nature and content of a rule of faith (including historical and Biblical underpinnings) as well as exercises and considerations surrounding individuals and groups crafting their own “rule for [faithful] living"

Presenter

After 35 years of active service in the East Texas area, the Rev. Dr. James H. “Jim” Reiter took early retirement from parish ministry so that he and his wife, Kathy, could pursue their interest in and passion for spiritual formation on a full-time basis. “Zoe-Life Explorations” was founded in the Spring of 2018–with the mission of facilitating experiences in and conversations about the “more” God has in store in the lives of individuals and faith communities.

Throughout the course of his active years as a United Methodist pastor, spiritual formation has been a keen passion and interest for Jim. It’s an interest/focus emerging from a host of streams, including service as chairperson of the Spiritual Formation Team of the Texas Annual Conference, explorations in the contemplative life, immersion experiences in monastic settings, leadership in a variety of retreat settings, research in stages of faith development, experience with and gleanings from traditional and not-so-traditional spiritual disciplines, and a keen interest in the intersection of Christ and culture – focused especially in the spiritual themes embedded in the movies.
