Artist Talk with Kieron Anderson

Join us for an in-depth yarn with Quandamooka artist Kieron Anderson as he shares the stories, processes and cultural knowledge behind his debut solo exhibition, Medicine Woven Through the Tide.

Kieron’s new body of work is the culmination of his Occupy Artist Residency in partnership with Vacant Assembly and Aboriginal Art Co, where he explored materials, cultural practices and storytelling through ceramics, sculpture, carving, painting and moving image.

Come, sit and learn about Kieron’s residency journey, his creative practice and the layers of meaning woven throughout this exhibition. Through experimentation with clay, traditional weaving practices, natural materials and mentorship from leading First Nations artists, Kieron has created a body of work deeply connected to Country, culture and knowledge sharing.

As one of the last males in his family line to know and practice the cultural tradition of dugong (Bagirang) hunting, Kieron will share how this connection to Quandamooka Saltwater Country has shaped his practice and informed his exploration of the dugong as a cultural teacher, provider and keeper of ecological knowledge.

Kieron will share insights into the relationships between seasons, foods, harvesting, hunting practices and the continuation of cultural knowledge, reflecting on medicine as something found not only within plants and animals, but within the reciprocal relationships between people, Country, tides and ocean.
