ARTISTIC STITCH TEXTILE ART WORKSHOPS - Narooma NSW
Event description
Artistic Stitch is a series of 5 workshops that will explore different ways to incorporate stitch-based techniques with mixed media to develop artwork.
Techniques/applications include: mark making with stitch, Japanese Sashiko & Boro, stitch with dye, print, photo/graphic media, textile collage, hand painting, applique, sculptural stitch, & experimental embroidery.
Workshops are led by textile artist Alison Bogg, for those who would like to:
- extend or learn a variety of stitch-based skills and explore how they can be applied to artmaking.
- experiment with associated techniques/mediums- mixed media, dye, print, painting, 3D sculptural, photo/graphic in combination with stitch to enrich artmaking.
- learn about historical/cultural aspects of techniques eg. Sashiko stitching (Japan), and how contemporary artists use them.
- relax and connect – enjoy meditative slow stitching and creative exploration of ideas and artistic possibilities in a peaceful, collaborative environment.
Each session provides support and stimulus to learn techniques and explore creative possibilities for your artwork.
Workshop 1 (Tuesday 27th February)
Expression in Stitch - mark making with stitch & introduction to the series.
Workshop 2 (Tuesday 26th March)
The Thread of Life - the beauty and imperfection of Japanese Sashiko & Boro.
Workshop 3 (Tuesday 30th April)
Art Cloth – combining stitch with dye, hand painting, printing & applique/collage.
Workshop 4 (Tuesday 28th May)
Paper Stitch– working on paper to combine stitch with drawing, print, graphic & photographic media.
Workshop 5 (Tuesday 25th June)
Form & Fantasy – Sculptural stitch & experimental embroidery/stitching.
Workshops are held on the last Tuesday of each month 9.30 am - 12.30pm from February through to June in the Narooma School of Arts Studio/Cottage.
Most materials are provided. Occasionally you may need to provide media/photo/fabric etc. of your own choice to use in an artwork. Any extra materials will be detailed prior to each workshop if required.
No experience necessary.
You are encouraged to participate in all 5 sessions to help develop a deeper building of skills and connections, though you are welcome to attend any selection of the individual sessions.
There may be an opportunity to present a small showing of work at the end of all workshop sessions.

Alison Bogg is a textile artist who runs workshops as part of her studio practice (Spring Indigo Textiles Studio, Bingie, NSW). She trained at NIDA (Design 1987), and for many years worked for various companies including Melbourne Theatre Company, Opera Australia, Handspan Visual Theatre, Australian Dance Theatre, Sydney Olympics 2000, ABC & SBS. Her background encompasses set/costume design, costume technology, textile arts, puppetry, & arts education. Her experience as a costume designer & art-finisher informs & inspires her work, with a focus on experimenting with textile surface design, indigo dyeing & Shibori. Workshops are an important facet of her arts practice, kindled by her experience as a creative arts teacher in schools. Exhibitions include Shimmering at Basil Sellers Exhibition Centre & Belconnen Arts Centre & The Space Between in Moruya, which she curated and coordinated. Alison is a member of Narooma School of Arts, Eurobodalla Fibre & Textile Artists Group & Craft Australia.
