Event description

This ashtanga yoga asana workshop will focus on vinyasa techniques and transitions within the Ashtanga Primary Series sequence.

A central tenet or emphasis in the asana practice is that we concentrate on our breath, drawing our attention inwards. The vinyasa system challenges us to sustain our attention throughout our practice, including when we move and transition between postures. This supports us to cultivate an inward focus and develop a moving, meditative style of practice. Often it will be during transitions that we drop our focus and are challenged to maintain the rhythm of the breath. Not only because it can be difficult for us to sustain attention and concentration for the duration of the practice, but also because many of the transitions are physically challenging (hello jumping back and through)! During this workshop we will explore options for approaching these transitions that may support you to build on technique while also understanding where, when and how to approach breathing.

We will commence the workshop with some introductory breath work to tune in and calm the nervous system to prepare the body/mind for practice. Techniques to develop, build upon and adapt transitions between the standing and seated postures of the primary series will be explored and practised within a led-style asana class. We will link and move between the postures using the art and rhythm of the breath. Options for developing and building upon your current practice will be explored, while also considering accessibility and modifications for individual needs (eg/ injuries).

As our practice (and lives!) evolve and we experience change and shifts, it is helpful to develop the skills necessary to accomodate and build our capacity to adapt in order to continue to move towards steadiness and balance. While we can understand and respect the structure available to us within the ashtanga yoga asana system - we can also debunk the common perception or myth that this style of asana practice is rigid or must remain so strictly ‘rule-bound’ to the degree that it is not inclusive and accessible to all. We will work towards understanding how we can develop, adapt, and maintain a long-term practice within a system that provides a helpful structure with many benefits.

This workshop has been developed as part of a series of workshops designed to explore key principles and foundational aspects, alongside the more subtle elements of the practice. Through applying particular techniques in our practice, we may shift towards a deeper awareness and connection with our inner state. In continuing to cultivate this awareness through concentration on the breath, we can also learn how to adapt over time to continue to support balance and longevity with our practice. The series of workshops are structured around ‘themes’, for example- Vinyasa technique and transitions; Backbending and introducing the intermediate series; and Inversions and the finishing series. While it is not necessary to join all sessions and they can be attended as stand alone workshops, there will be common elements weaved throughout each session as they link and build upon one another. The workshop numbers will need to be capped in order to meet the intention of offering suggestions and providing individual input to all attendees. These workshops will be revisited and delivered again - so please reach out to express your interest if you have missed a session that you wish to attend in future.

Reserving your place in these workshops in advance is required, and this can be done by message/email to me or booking through Humanitix. It is also much welcomed to reach out and communicate any particular questions, needs or current injuries prior to the workshop. Looking forward to sharing and exploring together the many depths and opportunities available with this practice.
