About the Film

A haunting reinterpretation of a classic Korean folktale, Kim Jee-woon’s A Tale of Two Sisters became both a domestic sensation and an international breakthrough for Korean horror when it was released in 2003. Drawing loosely from the folktale Janghwa Hongryeon, the film follows two sisters sent to live with their father and new stepmother in a secluded family home. As tensions simmer and unsettling events begin to unfold, the sisters cling to one another while strange accidents and ghostly encounters blur the line between memory, trauma and the supernatural.

Set largely within the confines of the family house, the film uses meticulous production design, sound, and carefully composed framing to place the audience as a quiet observer inside the unfolding tragedy. The result is a horror film that relies less on shocks and more on atmosphere — beautiful, unsettling, and emotionally disorientating in equal measure.

Widely regarded as one of the defining works of modern Korean horror, the film’s success quickly travelled beyond Asia, leading to the American remake The Uninvited in 2009 and influencing a wave of Western psychological horror that prioritised mood and ambiguity over conventional scares. Restored in 4K by the Korean Film Archive in 2016 under Kim Jee-woon’s supervision, A Tale of Two Sisters remains a landmark of early-2000s genre cinema.
