Asian Cinema Collective presents: Shutter (2004)
Event description
Sometimes... spirits long for their loved ones.
After a night of drinking, Jane and her boyfriend, Tun, get into a hit-and-run accident, resulting in the death of a young woman. In the days following, Tun starts to find mysterious shadows and faces in his photographs as the couple realise that they can run but never hide from the consequences of their actions.
One of the most commercially successful horror films of the time, Shutter burst onto screens in 2004. Written and directed by Banjong Pisanthanakun and Parkpoom Wongpoom, it was a breakthrough in South East Asian horror on the international stage, breaking records across Asia and the West.
Restored in 2024 to celebrate the film’s 20th anniversary, Shutter is an icon of Asian horror - employing a mix of classic jump scares and horror tropes alongside Thai traditions and culture to create a unique and shocking experience that has scared generations of film fans.
See Shutter on the big screen (as the directors intended) rather than through 37 different grainy clips on YouTube or a pirated DVD from Asia on Wednesday 15 October with the Asian Cinema Collective!
