Auckland Museum Workshops - Dinosaurs & Paleontology
Event description
Join other home educated families exploring the Auckland War Memorial Museum and participating in workshops to learn about the fascinating prehistoric world of Dinosaurs!
There is 3 sessions to choose from depending on your child's age.
Only 30 ākonga spaces available on each session.

10am Dinosaur Discovery (ECE age) 30-40 minutes
Children and whānau can discover more about dinosaurs through storytelling and hands-on exploration of replica bones.
This programme takes place in the Weird & Wonderful gallery and provides children the opportunity to explore their own interests.
11am Colossal Fossils (Years 1 - 4) 50 minutes
Get hands-on with replica dinosaur bones and observe and identify the characteristics of well-known herbivore and carnivore dinosaur species.
Delving deep into the fossil remains of prehistoric life, learners will discover the processes of palaeontology. Gain a greater appreciation for how dinosaurs have evolved, and how marine and avian reptiles differ.
12.30pm Palaeontology (Years 5-13) 60 minutes
Palaeontologists provide much of the knowledge we have about fossils, dinosaurs and other extinct species. Investigate and explore palaeontology and examine some specimen’s palaeontologists have found. In a hands-on experience, students learn about the process of fossilisation and how these discoveries help fill in the blanks in the evolutionary tree.

Please watch with the youth you are taking before you attend the event.
Be on time!
Please arrive at least 15 minutes prior to your first session time.
Familiarize yourself here for maps, exhibit closures, eating rules, bag rules & all other important information.
Large bags and backpacks cannot be taken into the galleries - Bag storage is limited and on a first come first served basis. It is highly recommended that if possible bags in your vehicle.

Musuem Staff will be waiting to meet you from 15 minutes before your session on the in Te Ao Mārama (South Atrium entrance facing Newmarket) so that we can begin our first programme on time.
A short welcome and health and safety briefing will be delivered to the entire group upon arrival. Please ensure you attend this welcome as there will not be multiple briefings.
About the Education Session:
Education sessions are led by a Museum Learning Specialist, which will be held in our Learning Labs on Level 1.Parents or a an allocated supervisor for your child/children must be present for all education sessions.
Museum Learning Specialists are not responsible for managing student behavior. Behavior management will be deferred to each parent.
Students will have the opportunity to engage with the handling collection. If you could encourage students before their visit to consider how they handle and respect museum specimens, objects and spaces.
Photography is welcome.

Check in: This is a self check in event. You will need to sign in your groups booking when you arrive at the event.
Group Minimums: There is a minimum amount of tickets that need to purchased on most events (set by the venue). If this event fails to reach the minimum amount of tickets booked before the last day of registration; the event will be cancelled and refunded.
