Event description

Mike McRoberts has been a familiar face on New Zealand television for over four decades. But behind the veteran journalist was a man grappling with a truth he felt unworthy to claim: He Māori ahau – I am Māori.

Speaking My Language is an invitation. It’s a call to Māori who have felt embarrassment or emptiness, showing they’re not alone, encouraging them to take the first step. It’s a call to those who have lapsed in their journey. For non-Māori, it’s a chance to understand why te reo and tikanga matter, and why championing the language is integral to Aotearoa as a whole. This blend of heartfelt memoir and insightful reflection welcomes people of all backgrounds to share in the power of te reo Māori.

Books will be available to purchase from McLeods Booksellers at the event.
