Join us at the Wagga Wagga Art Gallery for a free music concert with popular Sydney-based band Azadoota!

Known for their bright contemporary style and adapting traditional rhythms for today’s dance floors, Azadoota have been a favourite on the festival scene for almost three decades. Founder Robin Zirwanda comes from Iraq, where the indigenous Assyrians trace their lineage back 7000 years. Dressed in the garb of their ancient royal ancestors, Azadoota perform catchy originals in the Assyrian Aramaic language. Representing a renaissance of their ancient culture, Azadoota deliver an Assyrian extravaganza of percussive dance-rock worldbeat.

One of the highlights of Robin’s career was singing the national anthem of Iraq to a packed stadium, when the Socceroos played Iraq in Sydney. Robin has a strong connection to Iraqi soccer, as several Assyrian family friends had played in the Iraqi National team, including the famous coach Amo Baba. A star striker himself, Robin was recruited to a professional soccer team within weeks of migrating to Australia, and went on to make his mark in State and local competitions. Today Robin is a member of the “Oldyroos”, Australia’s national seniors team, and was the leading goal-scorer for the bronze medal-winning Australian team in the Veterans World Cup 2023.

We are thrilled to partner with our friends at the Wagga Wagga City Library on this program.
