Learn to sew in this fun Friday night five-week beginners sewing class with a twist, open to adults and teens.  Learn all the basics of sewing AND how to do it using a zero waste/upcycled ethos.

You will learn to: 

  • Confidently use a sewing machine 
  • Use the straight stitch and zigzag stitch 
  • Finish the seam 

WEEK 1 – Getting to know your sewing machine + Getting to know each other 

WEEK 2 – Making a bag + Discussing sewing supplies 

  • Using what you already have (ribbons, shoelaces, straps) 
  • What not to throw away?  Recovering zips, buttons, fastenings etc. from garments destined to landfill. 
  • Shopping in the op-shops - what to buy, what to avoid. 

WEEK 3 – Making a pencil case or a coin purse + Talking about fabric 

  • Taking care of your machine - cleaning and oiling
  • Buying a new or second hand sewing machine

WEEK 4 – Making Japanese knot bag + Talking about sewing machines 

  • Types of fabric - woven vs. knit
  • Buying new - spotlight vs specialty shops
  • Threads and needles
  • Repurposing old garments

WEEK 5 – Design and make your own personal project
