Learn to sew in this fun Friday night five-week beginners sewing class with a twist, open to adults and teens. Learn all the basics of sewing AND how to do it using a zero waste/upcycled ethos.

You will learn to:

Confidently use a sewing machine
Use the straight stitch and zigzag stitch
Finish the seam

WEEK 1 – Getting to know your sewing machine + Getting to know each other

WEEK 2 – Making a bag + Discussing sewing supplies

Using what you already have (ribbons, shoelaces, straps)
What not to throw away? Recovering zips, buttons, fastenings etc. from garments destined to landfill.
Shopping in the op-shops - what to buy, what to avoid.

WEEK 3 – Making a pencil case or a coin purse + Talking about fabric

Taking care of your machine - cleaning and oiling
Buying a new or second hand sewing machine

WEEK 4 – Making Japanese knot bag + Talking about sewing machines

Types of fabric - woven vs. knit
Buying new - spotlight vs specialty shops
Threads and needles
Repurposing old garments

WEEK 5 – Design and make your own personal project
