Beginners Japanese Tea Workshop in Newtown, Sydney
Description
Learn Japanese tea properly, from someone qualified to teach it.
Saturday 24 October 2026, 1:30 to 3:30 pm. Newtown Neighbourhood Centre, 11-13 Darley St, Newtown NSW 2042.
A relaxed, hands-on introduction to Japanese tea with Taka Kaneko, one of only two Japanese Tea Instructors in Australia certified by the NPO Nihoncha Instructor Association. Two hours, split evenly between understanding the tea and actually making it.
Part one, tea knowledge (60 minutes): the history and culture of Japanese tea, the main types and how each is brewed, how green tea and matcha are produced, and what's in your cup.
Part two, hands-on (60 minutes): a guided demonstration, then you prepare your own bowl of matcha and brew your own cup of green tea (sencha). Questions welcome throughout.
Anyone curious about Japanese tea is welcome. No experience needed and nothing to bring. This is an educational workshop rather than a formal tea ceremony, so come as you are. Every session is capped at 15, so everyone gets real time with the whisk.
