Behind Closed Doors
Event description
Unite, Understand and Take Action against Domestic Abuse in South Asian Communities
We love our community – its’ vibrant, rich and meaningful. But there are dark parts to our community that we need to talk about - patterns and cycles that we want to break. We want a future where control and abuse have no part to play in lives, marriages and families for our people. Whether you are a child, sibling, cousin, parent or friend of someone experiencing domestic abuse, we want it to stop and we know you do too.
Behind Closed Doors is an opportunity for us to unite as a concerned community on the issue of control and domestic abuse. Using the arts as means of reflecting on this topic we’re creating a safe and confidential space where people can feel supported to discuss these topics without repercussion; free from judgement and shame.
Our community experts will curate a unique 60 minute immersive performance that explores the ways abuse can manifests in South Asian communities. Following this, our partners, the ICSA (Indian (sub-Cont) Crisis & Support Agency) will lead a discussion on tangible ways that we can work with our community, culture and values (rather than against them) to reduce and eventually alleviate domestic abuse for South Asian communities.
Light food and drink will be provided following the event where you can forge connections and continue the conversation with experts and advocates in the sector.
This event will be fundraising for our partners, the ICSA (Indian (sub-Cont) Crisis & Support Agency) are the first NGO for the South Asian Community in Australia. They are dedicated to assisting people of Indian Subcontinent origin who are in crisis through advocacy and case management services.
All tickets and donations are tax deductible. ICSA has DGR status for all donations over $2.
