Description

Behind the Lens workshop program is a professional development initiative designed to support emerging and mid‑career Directors, Producers, Creatives, and Cinematographers.

There are two workshops you can choose from: The first workshop explores the creative foundations of optics, visual storytelling, and film language, while the second workshop is an advanced technical session tailored for those working behind the camera.

Presented by Nic Godoy, National Sales and Marketing Manager at Panavision Australia, the workshops draw on Nic’s 26 years of industry experience. With live cameras and a range of Panavision lenses on stage, Nic will demonstrate how different optics influence perspective, depth and atmosphere, and how these creative choices can subtly or dramatically shape the storytelling experience. This special presentation brings a rare combination of technical mastery and creative insight to an engaging hands‑on session.

Accomplished Director and Cinematographer Meg White ACS will also join the workshop to present a case study, offering a behind‑the‑scenes look at the collaborative process from pre‑production through to final delivery on a feature film and television series.

Workshop Schedule

11:30am – 1:30pm — Session One: Directors & Creatives

This session focuses on the essential role of visual language in storytelling. Participants will explore key pre‑production practices, including crafting treatments, understanding lens characteristics, and developing effective testing methods and practices. The goal is to equip Directors and Creatives with the tools to clearly articulate their vision and strengthen communication with Cinematographers and Heads of Department.

A special case study presentation by Meg White ACS will also be featured.

1:30pm – 2:30pm — Networking Lunch

A relaxed lunch with light refreshments, offering an excellent opportunity to connect with fellow attendees and industry professionals.

2:30pm – 4:30pm — Session Two: Advanced Technical Training

Designed for Cinematographers, Camera Assistants, post‑production professionals, and those working in advanced technical roles, this session provides an in‑depth exploration and breakdown of optics, including Spherical, Anamorphic, Large Format, and Super 35 lenses. The workshop will also cover Panavision’s latest trends in lens modification and customisation, providing valuable insights into the evolving craft of cinematography.

All attendees are invited to join the networking lunch between sessions.

If you’re attending the morning session, stay for lunch—and if you’re joining for the afternoon, come early. You never know when you might meet your next collaborator.

Presented in partnership with Panavision, Australian Cinematography Society, and Arts & Cultural Exchange supported by Screen NSW.
