Beneath the Textured Layers
Event description
Beneath the Textured Layers with Jo Roszkowski
Cost: $180 or $175 members
What are artist books? Artist books are designed to be artworks in and of themselves. The maker uses the format, materials, and concept of a book to express and expand their artistic ideas, usually conveyed with multi-media. The structure of what we know as a book is therefore taken beyond everyday expectations, crossing boundaries and defying limitations.
To construct your artist book you’ll explore a variety of techniques such as botanical printing, rust printing, mono printing on tea bag paper, as well as layering with papers, adding textile fibres, drawing, plus mark-making with stitches. Personal motifs, found objects, snippets of text, rusted metal and cord will add further character to your work. The combined elements of visible and partially transparent layers produce compelling representations. Your response to the experiments, processes and results will be unpredictable and somewhat magical.
Level
Suitable for everyone
Materials to bring
Pencils, note pad, scissors.
Hard cover vintage book from the op shop (standard novel size, the older the better; pages of text on soft paper is ideal).
Eight dry, used teabags (we can supplement if you’re not a tea drinker)
Special, small objects you’ve collected along the way for a ‘good’ reason (eg rusty key or washer, old watch face, bottle top, postage stamps etc).
A variety of collage materials to personalise your work.
Supplied
Jo has a range of collage materials to supplement your own and will provide all dyes, papers and other necessary materials.
Outline
Jo will discuss the process of transforming a vintage hard cover book using printing techniques, the use of multimedia and found objects. After preparing paper and botanical materials for the dye pot, we’ll watch Jo’s printing demonstrations and conduct our own personal experimentation. Students will rotate around the different workstations so that each person has a chance to practice the different methods. Students will then design and assemble their work into their vintage book and take it home to continue work and complete.
