Bibra Lake Turtle Tracker Training

The Turtle Tracking Training events delivered by Wetlands Conservation Society, Walliabup Wildlife Warriors and the City of Cockburn provided new and returning volunteers with practical, field‑ready skills to support Bibra Lake’s conservation efforts during the 2026 nesting season. Across the scheduled sessions, participants received an introduction to turtle ecology, learned how to identify nesting behaviour, and were trained in the standard operating procedures required for safe and effective tracking.
The program covers; correct use of TurtleSAT for data entry, morning and afternoon patrol techniques, communication protocols, and guidelines for responding to injured turtles, road-strikes, and nest predation.

Volunteers will also meet experienced Trackers and Spotters, strengthening the community network that underpins the Save Our Snake Necked Turtle (SOSNT) program. These training events ensured all participants are confident, prepared and aligned with evidence‑based methods for protecting Southwestern Snake‑necked Turtles throughout the season.
