Event description

Join guest speakers from Melbourne Water and Narrap Rangers for a guided walk at Spadonis Reserve in Yering to learn about the vital role billabongs play in the landscape, ecology and Wurundjeri culture.

Spadonis Reserve, Yering, is an ecologically and culturally significant site along the Birrarung featuring a 1.7km accessible gravel walking trail. The site boasts a rich cultural history as important hunting and fishing grounds for it’s Traditional Owners- the Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung people.

Spadonis Reserve has been a part of Yarra Ranges Council’s Yering Billabongs Project, which aims to restore the adjoining 60 hectares of floodplain to assist with water quality treatment, stormwater management and supporting local biodiversity.

This event is presented by Yarra Ranges Council.

Please note: The reserve features flat paths. We encourage you to wear weather-appropriate clothing. There are also no toilets on-site. The nearest facilities are Main Street, Lilydale or at the Coldstream Pump Track.

Accessibility: This event is wheelchair friendly. Riverfest welcomes everyone—we’re committed to making our events accessible and inclusive for people of all abilities. If you have accessibility needs and require support to attend, please email carolyn.tate@yarrariver.org.au

Acknowledgement of Country

The Yarra Riverkeeper Association acknowledges that the lands and waterways of the Yarra, Birrarung catchment, are the unceded territories of the Wurundjeri Woi-Wurrung and Bunurong peoples. We pay respect to Traditional Owners, who have, and continue, to care for Country. We acknowledge that the river now called Yarra has always been known as the Birrarung by its custodians.
