Birds at Birrarung Banks

Join bird experts for a guided walk through Birrarung Banks, a unique riverside reserve on Wurundjeri Country, where the Birrarung (Yarra River) meets Gardiners Creek (KooyongKoot).

Led by Gillian Jervis of the KooyongKoot Alliance, with support from Alison Richards of Rewilding Stonnington and Frank Giorlando of the Yarra Link Project, this family-friendly event will introduce you to the remarkable birdlife that lives in and visits this important meeting place of two waterways.

As you explore the site, you'll learn how to identify local bird species, discover simple birdwatching techniques, and gain a deeper understanding of the habitats that support wildlife in Melbourne's urban environment.

Recently opened to the public through a partnership between Rewilding Stonnington and Melbourne Water, Birrarung Banks is an exciting example of how restoration and community collaboration can reconnect people with nature.

You'll also discover practical ways to improve local habitat and find inspiration to connect with nature in your own neighbourhood.

Meeting point: Corner of Lansell Road and Heyington Place, Toorak.

• Most Riverfest events are free, and many have limited places with long waitlists. Please only book if you're confident you can attend, so others don't miss out. Bookings are limited to 2 tickets for smaller events and 4 tickets for larger events.

Please note that this site is located on a slope and includes some steep paths. Unfortunately, it is not wheelchair accessible and may not be suitable for people with limited mobility.

Getting there: The site is just a short walk from Heyington Station on the Glen Waverley Line.

Parking: Limited street parking is available on Lansell Road and Heyington Place.
