Science in the Distillery: How Genetic Science is Future-Proofing the Big Scrub Rainforest
Description
A rainforest in fragments, a changing climate and a future that depends on resilience.
How do we ensure restoration efforts of the Big Scrub build the genetic diversity and ecological resilience needed to thrive for generations to come?
Join us for an evening exploring how the latest science is helping shape the future of the Big Scrub rainforest.
Hear from leading researchers and local conservation practitioners working across evolutionary ecology, genetic diversity and rainforest restoration, such as the Head of Research Centre for Ecosystem Resilience at the Botanic Gardens of Sydney, Professor Maurizio Rossetto, and biologist and evolutionary ecologist, Dr. Rob Kooyman.
Together, our speakers will explore the Big Scrub’s remarkable evolutionary history, why genetic diversity is critical to the resilience of rainforest ecosystems, and how this science is being translated into action through the Science Saving Rainforests program and Big Scrub Buffers Project.
From 5:30pm, arrive early to grab a drink from the Cape Byron Distillery bar, order food from the on-site food truck and mingle with fellow rainforest enthusiasts while taking in the sunset over Brookfarm’s regenerated rainforest.
Then settle in for an evening of fascinating talks from 7:00pm followed by a Q&A.
Come along to discover what we’re learning about the Big Scrub and how science is helping guide its restoration and recovery.

Lineup

Professor Maurizio Rossetto
Head of the Research Centre for Ecosystem Resilience, Botanic Gardens of Sydney Prof. Maurizio Rossetto will explore why genetic diversity is so important for the resilience of rainforest ecosystems, and share insights into the methodology behind the Science Saving Rainforests program, including how the Botanic Gardens of Sydney uses genetic research to identify and guide the collection of plant material for restoration.

Dr Rob Kooyman
Biologist & Evolutionary Ecologist Dr Rob Kooyman’s work focuses on the ecology, evolution and conservation of rainforest ecosystems across the globe. Rob will take us back through the evolutionary history of the Big Scrub, exploring what makes this rainforest ecosystem so unique and significant, and the ecological story behind the forest we are working to restore today.

Mark Dunphy
President of Big Scrub Rainforest Conservancy & Owner of Firewheel Rainforest Nursery Mark will share insights into the on-ground restoration work of the Science Saving Rainforests program, including how the program’s genetic approach is being translated into practical restoration across the Big Scrub.

Michelle Chapman
DCCEEW Project Manager for the Big Scrub Buffers Project & Founder of Seedtree Maps Michelle Chapman works at the intersection of conservation, mapping and rainforest restoration. Michelle will introduce the Big Scrub Buffers Project, exploring how strategic restoration and connectivity can strengthen and expand the remaining fragments of the Big Scrub rainforest.
