Celebrating Cultures Pop-Up: Teuga Tapa artmaking

The purpose of this workshop is to teu, or adorn and decorate your own piece of tapa cloth with contemporary artist Jasmine Tuia. Small cloths of tapa will be provided for participants to teu or decorate. Drawing on Jasmine’s siapo making and decorative practice, participants are invited to use two integrated siapo techniques and materials she developed in her making to create their own tapa. Teuga tapa will use tapa su’i, the stitching/embroidery technique and the traditional rubbing technique using contemporary upeti fala/lolomi tablets called elei. The workshop will begin with a short introduction of tapa, Samoan siapo, its process including its types, decorative techniques, materials, and functionality over time. Resources such as Siapo designs, embroidery are provided for inspiration, but all participants are encouraged to su’i or elei a pattern that resonates most from learning about tapa in the workshop.
