Ceramics Sculpture: The Human Head
Join us for a three-session ceramics workshop focused on creating a human head sculpture from clay.

10:00 AM–2:00 PM
Your ticket reserves your place for all three sessions. Each class continues from the previous Saturday, so participants should plan to attend all three dates.
During the first class, you will build the basic shape of the head and neck and learn about facial proportions. The second class will focus on creating the eyes, nose, mouth, ears, and other facial features. During the final class, you will refine the sculpture, add hair, texture, expression, and finishing details, and prepare it for firing.
No previous ceramics or sculpture experience is required. All clay, tools, materials, equipment, and firing are included.
The workshop is limited to 15 participants (ages 18 and older), allowing everyone to receive demonstrations, individual support, and personalized guidance.
Clay can be messy, so please wear comfortable clothing and closed-toe shoes that you do not mind getting dirty.

Saturday, October 17th
Building the Head and Understanding Proportions Lesson focus: Creating the basic structure of the head and neck. 10:00–10:20 AM — Welcome and Introduction Participants will meet the instructor, review studio expectations, learn basic clay-handling techniques, and discuss the goals of the workshop. 10:20–10:50 AM — Demonstration: Human-Head Proportions The instructor will explain the basic proportions of the human head, including the placement of the eyes, nose, mouth, ears, jawline, and neck. 10:50 AM–12:00 PM — Constructing the Head and Neck Participants will begin building the main form of their sculpture. The focus will be on creating a strong foundation and establishing the overall shape of the head, neck, and shoulders. 12:00–12:20 PM — Break 12:20–1:40 PM — Establishing the Facial Structure Participants will identify the centerline, eye level, nose placement, mouth placement, and other important landmarks. Basic facial planes and forms will be added. 1:40–2:00 PM — Review and Storage Preparation The sculptures will be reviewed, lightly refined, and carefully covered so the clay remains workable for the following Saturday. By the end of the first class: Each participant will have a complete basic head and neck form with the facial features correctly positioned.

Saturday, October 24th
Developing the Facial Features and Expression Lesson focus: Creating realistic facial features and giving the sculpture personality. 10:00–10:20 AM — Review and Clay Preparation Participants will uncover their sculptures, check the moisture level, and review the proportions established during the first session. 10:20–10:50 AM — Demonstration: Sculpting Facial Features The instructor will demonstrate how to build the eyes, eyelids, nose, lips, ears, cheeks, chin, and jaw using additive and subtractive sculpting techniques. 1 0:50 AM–12:00 PM — Developing the Eyes, Nose, and Mouth Participants will begin shaping the main facial features while receiving individual guidance. 12:00–12:20 PM — Break 12:20–1:30 PM — Ears, Cheeks, Jawline, and Expression Participants will complete the remaining features and begin developing the personality and expression of the sculpture. 1:30–1:50 PM — Refining Proportions The sculpture will be viewed from different angles to identify areas that need adjustment, balance, or additional definition. 1:50–2:00 PM — Cleanup and Storage The sculptures will be covered and stored carefully to maintain the correct moisture level. By the end of the second class: The main facial features will be fully developed, and each sculpture will begin to show an individual expression and character.

Saturday, October 31st
Refining, Detailing, and Completing the Sculpture Lesson focus: Completing the portrait and preparing it for drying and firing. 10:00–10:20 AM — Final Review Participants will examine their sculptures from the front, sides, and back and identify the final areas that need improvement. 10:20–10:45 AM — Demonstration: Hair, Texture, and Finishing Details The instructor will demonstrate different ways to create hair, surface texture, expression lines, and decorative details without overworking the clay. 10:45 AM–12:00 PM — Final Refinement Participants will improve the facial features, smooth or texture selected areas, and strengthen the overall expression of the sculpture. 12:00–12:20 PM — Break 12:20–1:15 PM — Adding Hair and Surface Details Participants will complete the hair, neck, shoulders, textures, and any final artistic elements. 1:15–1:40 PM — Preparing the Sculpture for Firing The instructor will explain the drying and firing process. Sculptures will be checked for thickness, stability, trapped air, and other concerns before firing. 1:40–2:00 PM — Final Presentation and Cleanup Participants will share their completed sculptures, discuss what they learned, take photographs, and clean their work areas. By the end of the final class: Each participant will have completed an original ceramic human-head sculpture ready for controlled drying and firing
