Coaching without Coaching - PITS Festival 2026

The way you get good at improv is by doing it over and over with people you like. But doing improv without a coach — rehearsing or jamming — is risky business: no feedback risks reinforcing bad habits, but a group ‘coach’ risks bad advice and yuck power dynamics.

The good news is there are ways to coach without coaching. Using the power of metacognition, we'll look at how to make the most of jamming and doing reps together in a way that complements, rather than contradicts, coaching and classes.

There will be theory and cognitive science, plus a chance for some quick reps running games/exercises to practise.

Zero improv skill is needed to coach this way — just curiosity and open-mindedness.
