    Event description

Inner West for Refugees in collaboration with the Jesuit Refugee Service invites you to a lunchtime of mutual sharing and engagement with people seeking asylum at Colombo Social restaurant.

Hear from two people with lived experience of seeking asylum. Thanush is a human rights activist who came to Australia after having to flee Sri Lanka. When arriving in Australia by boat he was put in indefinite detention, including time on Manus Island.

Maggie is a sports journalist who came to Australia seeking asylum. In Australia, Maggie has continued to use her journalism skills and passion to advocate for the rights of her community.

This event will take us through interview style conversations to delve into ways each of us can make a difference in our daily lives.  It will help you to learn about a range of organisations and opportunities to progress human rights. You will leave with a full heart and a head full of ways your actions can make a difference.

Colombo Social is more than a restaurant. It’s a social enterprise which provides employment and training opportunities for people seeking asylum, while serving fresh, soulful food in a convivial and colourful setting. Enjoy delicious Sri Lankan and fusion cuisine straight from Amma’s cookbook.

Ticket value is $70. The generosity of Club Ashfield, Suzanne Waldron and Colombo Social makes it possible to offer this exceptional discounted deal.   Drinks can be purchased at the venue.

Jesuit Refugee Service (JRS) Australia advocates, accompanies and serves refugees, people seeking asylum and migrants in vulnerable situations. They run a number of programs to do this including a foodbank program, case work team, employment support program, a women's only space for women experiencing domestic violence, community events, emergency relief payments and high level advocacy with politicians. They support 3000 people a year and can only do this thanks to the support and generosity of the community. Find out more at aus.jrs.net

Suzanne Waldron is fascinated by humanity and how we relate to ourselves and one another. Believing that honest, hopeful and truthful relationships are the bedrock of fulfilment and progress, Suzanne works with individuals, organisations and influencers to build cohesive relationships in community, government and not for profits. She works globally combining her skills as a behavioural change facilitator, artist, writer and speaker.

Photos will be taken on the day for promotional purposes.  If you don't want your photo taken and published please let the organisers know on the day.
