What We'll Do

6.30 pm - Learn - Foraging in your Backyard: Useful Weeds
Presented by Lyn Wetzig

Many plants which we see as pests and struggle to eradicate were medicine and food for our ancestors and still are in many countries around the world. People are taking an interest in the “old ways” again, recognizing that the “new ways” – mass produced food, global transportation, picked unripe, sprayed with herbicides, pesticides, fungicides and insecticides, relying on drugs (and with many side effects) for medicine and so on – are not the best way to live. By incorporating some of the wild things we can find in our backyards (and elsewhere) means we can become more self-reliant in the areas of food and medicine.

Lyn will introduce common weeds:

  • what they show about our soils
  • how they are beneficial, and
  • how to use them in food and medicine.

You will receive notes and recipes to make your own salves, oils and vinegars.

    Lyn Wetzig

Lyn graduated in 2008 with a Bachelor of Health Science (Nutritional Medicine) from the Australian College of Natural Medicine with an award for Excellence in Clinical Practice, and in 2015 with an Advanced Diploma of Western Herbal Medicine (Australian Institute of Applied Science).

Since moving to Crows Nest, weeds have become a part of her life, and she is constantly learning about them. She would also like to find more time to pursue other interests – spinning, weaving and photography, but regards herself as a beginner in these areas.

Lyn has been a volunteer teacher with U3A for some years in Crows Nest, teaching nutrition, herbs and weeds, as well as leading a photography group and is looking at teaching a basic weaving course. She is working a day or so a week at Go Vita Bamboo Pantry in Crows Nest as a nutritional and herbal consultant, and is quite involved in her local church.
